Pro Bono

Since 1993, the Leonard, Street and Deinard Legal Clinic has provided pro bono legal services to residents of the Phillips and surrounding neighborhoods of Minneapolis. One of our primary goals is to bridge the gap between the legal needs of an economically disadvantaged and culturally diverse population and the shortage of attorneys available to do this work.

The Legal Clinic is located in the Community-University Health Care Center (CUHCC) at 2001 Bloomington Avenue South in Minneapolis. CUHCC opened its doors in 1966 to provide comprehensive medical, dental and mental health services to those who might not have access to mainstream health care services, due to socioeconomic or cultural barriers. Most of the Legal Clinic's cases involve family law issues, such as divorce, parenting time and child support, and housing, immigration, consumer and government benefit matters.

Over the last 17 years, the Leonard, Street and Deinard Legal Clinic has handled over 1,000 matters, provided more than 67,000 hours of service and donated over $17 million in legal services. The Clinic now serves more than 100 clients each year.

According to Keith Moheban, Pro Bono Committee member at Leonard, Street and Deinard, "The Legal Clinic serves a great role as a 'reality check' for attorneys. It reminds us that practicing law is a privilege that requires responsibility to ensure that everyone has equal access to the law."
