Scholarship Program

Leonard, Street and Deinard is the only Twin Cities-based law firm to offer a comprehensive scholarship and professional development program to all four of Minnesota's law schools:

  • Hamline University School of Law
  • University of Minnesota Law School
  • University of St. Thomas School of Law
  • William Mitchell College of Law

Each academic year, 12 minority students participate in our program.

Each Leonard, Street and Deinard Minority Scholar receives:

  • Annual tuition assistance - Leonard, Street and Deinard is committed to paying half of each Scholar's annual tuition. Participating schools often match this contribution, resulting in a full scholarship opportunity.
  • Partner and Associate mentoring - Each Scholar is assigned a mentor who is a practicing attorney with our firm.  Scholars receive individual and informal guidance to promote professional and personal success within a major business and litigation law firm. We encourage our Scholars to experience learning opportunities at the firm, and they are invited to attend social functions.
  • Paid clerkship - Each Scholar is eligible, following his or her first year of law school, for a summer work opportunity that includes an office, secretarial support, and client assignments.
  • Professional writing coach - Each Scholar has the opportunity for one-on-one assistance to sharpen and enhance writing skills.

Meet, Mingle, and Connect

At Leonard, Street and Deinard, we believe a balanced legal education combines academic instruction with professional development opportunities. Through this initiative, we believe we are laying the groundwork for continued greatness in the practice of law. Through our comprehensive program, minority students can build a network of contacts, improve their knowledge of the legal profession, and determine the type of practice and area of law that best suits their goals.

Leonard, Street and Deinard’s Minority Scholars Program is an essential and valuable opportunity for our Scholars and our profession.

To celebrate the year and enhance the overall experience, we hold an annual networking dinner for deans, school representatives, attorneys from the firm and alumni scholars to meet, mingle, and connect. It's an event you won't want to miss.

In 2008 our current and alumni scholars number 26; we add four scholars annually to our vibrant and growing network.

Comments from our Scholars:

As seen in the December/January 2005 issue of Minnesota Law & Politics magazine:

"A lot of people say diversity is what we need," says Juan Vega. "But with this scholarship, Leonard, Street really is putting its money where its mouth is."
— Juan Vega, University of Minnesota

“Leonard, Street and Deinard’s commitment to diversity is clear – 22 current and alumni minority scholars across four Minnesota law schools speaks for itself. While many people in the profession talk about increasing diversity, Leonard, Street and Deinard has devoted time, energy and money to help minority law students succeed in school and beyond. For me, personally, being part of the minority scholars program is invaluable.”
— Shubha Harris, William Mitchell College of Law

"I would have experienced a tougher time without the Leonard, Street and Deinard program because it is such a competitive profession. Beyond the financial benefits, the program has done a lot for me…So much that I can actually say the program is priceless."
— Adam Maier, Hamline University (And now an associate at Leonard, Street and Deinard)
